Father's Day

So, I'm a little late with my Father's Day post.

This year the boys and I made Mike this frame. Kind of like a scrapbook page on glass.

I'm a big fan of involving the kiddos in the process of picking out gifts or making the gift. To me it makes it a lot more special. I doubt that Mike would have shown the same enthusiasm over a mini bottle of ketchup that I had picked out. (Drew thought that was a brilliant gift and, of course, Mike loved it! It was a perfect fit for his lunch box that he takes to work.)

The night before I (with thankfully, lots of help from family!) covered Drew and Jackson's hands with paint and stamped them onto a piece of cardstock. Drew was very unhappy and refused to partake until he saw that Jackson loved the process and the squishy paint.


After I added the Happy Father's Day with alphabet stickers, I adhered the hand print covered cardstock to the center of the glass. The rest I put together exactly like I would a scrapbook page. Lots of pictures, some word stickers, and some rub ons.


I had to be careful to choose embellishments that were flat since all of this is sandwiched between two pieces of glass.

Mike also got a few of the Father's Day "staples", a.k.a a wallet, some work out shorts, a dvd, etc. When it came time to give him the frame I actually apologized and told him, "You have to know that you're going to get something scrapbook related, right?" He pulled out the frame and studied it silently for a long time. Just when I was thinking he was doing the polite look at it for a long time thing, he said, "This is the best gift I've ever gotten."

Reason #126 I love summer...

Watermelon.

Drew loves watermelon and according to him Aunt Gina's house is THE place to eat it. In the summer if we make a trip to Gina's the second he gets out of the vehicle he'll yell, "Gina, do you have watermelon?". Of course she is a wonderful aunt and always has his favorite summer snack on hand. A couple of weeks ago we bought a watermelon while out grocery shopping and Drew asked me on the way out to our car, "Mom, are we doing to Gina's to eat this watermelon?" :)

The little mini watermelon on my layout is handmade and super easy. I used three different sized circle punches to punch out the green paper and then two out of the red glitter paper. After I cut them in half and layered them with pop dots, I added black Stickles for the seeds. :)

Recipe cards, scrapbooking style.

The layout that I posted on the last blog entry is part of a new display I've set up at Scrapbook Generation. Allison's Creative Kitchen, recipe cards for the scrapbooker. I've been wanting to do something like this for awhile but it just kept getting pushed back.


Once a month, I will create a two-page layout, the layout will be displayed with the supplies necessary to reproduce the pages. What makes this different is that I'll also have a "recipe card" that explains the needed supplies and has some basic information about the layout on the back, and then a color photo on the front. The recipe cards are $.79, and I have also made a 12x12 star template that can be purchased and used to make this layout.


I tried to create something that would work for the beginner and the advanced. Each recipe card has a basic "ingredient" list and directions and then a "Spice it Up!" ingredient list and directions.

the fourth

I love the fourth. Like love, love, love the fourth. It is without a doubt my favorite holiday. I love that it's stress free. I love that I don't have to worry about gifts or costumes or money. I love that it boils down to spending time with family and friends, eating good food, watching fireworks and laughing at those glowing smiles on the kids faces as they dance around with sparklers. (Or in Drew's case, stand completely still and watch the sparkler in a trance like state. He was fascinated.)

I must say it's also one of my favorite things to scrapbook. I think stars might be one of my favorite shapes to use on a layout and the fourth gives me every reason to use them (and probably over use them!)
