This is the sketch, from Sketches for Scrapbooking, Volume 6 (available July 1), that each of my layouts this week are based off of.
Layout #5 - "Freedom"
Supply List - Cardstock: Bazzill; Patterned paper, cardstock stickers, and star glitter border: We R Memory Keepers; Alphabet: My Mind's Eye
• Variation #1 - Who says that circle on the sketch has to be a circle on your layout? To go with the theme of my "Freedom" layout I substituted a large star cut from patterned paper for the big circle on the right page. I used a skinnier version of the same homemade star template I talked about on this post here.
• Variation #2 - On the left side of the page I moved the title more towards the center of the layout. Since I was just using one medium sized star (the one on the left page) having the title over that star would have left a gap. I'm so weird about gaps and holes on my pages! Even if I would have moved the star up to be right underneath the title it would have left a gap above the smaller photo. I could have added some more stars but with the large star on the right page I didn't want to go too overboard. Plus the other two groups of stars followed the same pattern, one medium star, and I wanted to stay with that pattern on the right page. Sometimes I can be so particular about silly things!
• Variation #3 - When I start adding my pictures to the right page I ended up with one more picture that I really wanted to get on the layout. To do this I just cut it to 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" to match the other photos on the right page and then placed it where the journaling would go. This also happened to work perfectly since I didn't have a whole lot of journaling for this page and that picture took care of any holes I might have ended up with.
• Variation #4 - Since the extra picture took the suggested journaling spot I added a few of my journaling strips above the photo and a few below it. I made sure that the top strips ended at the end of a sentence. I didn't want to break up the journaling too much since there was already a picture between the strips.
• Variation #5 - Instead of using a patterned paper strip along the bottom I used a star/circle glitter border.
Because part of the blue glitter border would be going over the large blue star on the right page I added stitching around each star. I was afraid that the blue on blue would have made the glitter border a little hard to see. This way those stars are framed and stand out against the blue patterned paper star.
Left Side of the Sketch
Layout #6 - "Crayola Cafe"
Supply List - Cardstock: Bazzill; Alphabets: Maya Road and Doodlebug; Brads: Doodlebug; Stickles
Just like the right side, the left side of the sketch makes for a great one-page layout.
• Variation #1 - Since this side of the sketch didn't have the journaling I had to find a spot for it. I thought the easiest place was to substitute it for the picture on the bottom. If I wouldn't have had so much journaling I would have kept that picture and then added my journaling to the left of it. Either way works great!
One of the most fun things about this layout was that I made everything, with the exception of the title, brads and some Stickles that I added to accent a few things. Since the layout was about our visit to Crayola Cafe I thought it would be fun to play off the theme and color my own patterned paper and embellishments with crayons. You can see the "patterned paper" and journaling strips in the picture below.
I added green Stickles to the dots on the bottom strip and on the journaling strips I printed my journaling, colored lightly over it, and then cut it into strips.
For the embellishments I cut three different stars and colored them with crayons. The texture of the cardstock really showed through the coloring. I thought the perfect embellishment would be to copy the spaceship in the picture.
I drew the spaceship with a green crayon, added some brads to the center circles, and then added some Stickles to outline it. I also added some yellow swirls coming out of the bottom of the spaceship.
For the title I colored chipboard letters with a red crayon. Talk about a fast way to cover chipboard!
Not your average way to make a scrapbook page but it sure was fun to do something a little different and to really incorporate the theme into every detail on the page.

Love the giant star on your first layout!
ReplyDeleteAnother fantastic and versatile sketch!
Love the layout! I never would have thought of changing the big circle into a star. LOL I'll have to start looking at sketches in a different way now.
ReplyDeletewow! I love the crayon idea! And the sketch too :)
ReplyDeleteLove the large star, brilliant and the stitching around the glitter stars in the circles.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for showing a one page variation!!! That is mostly what I scrap (although I do have many two pagers as well) and it's nice to see how you handled it.
ReplyDeleteLOVE that crayon layout! I would never have thought to use plain old crayons and Stickles to embellish a page!
ReplyDeleteYou never cease to amaze me. I actually get up earlier then usual during sketch week just to see what you before the kids are up. It worth getting up early every time. I love that you changed it to a star, had a feeling you'd do that this week. All the details you think of and put in are so awesome, stitiching around the stars, never would have thought of that. The whole layout looks good, love seeing baby Drew again. Hands down love the crayon one best because coloring & crayons are my favorite. When I buy them for the kids I get my own box just for ME no sharing,lol..I am so happy you made the embellishments was hoping to see that too. That must have been so fun to color everything. I love that your doing some one page layouts as well. Happy belated birthday to you and Jackson.
ReplyDeletep.s. you are spoiling us with this two layouts a day, might have to keep doing that, lol
I love looking everyday and using these sketches. Very creative! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThe star completely changes the look of the first sketch. I also love the star border instead of a paper strip at the bottom. The crayola layout is so much fun. You color very well, Allison!
ReplyDeleteHow do you keep doing such a great job?! I love the crayons on the chipboard. I had never thought of it,so simple but yet versatile. I call sketch week "inspiration week." Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWOW! I just LOVE these two layouts today! The big star on the first layout is awesome and I love all the little details you used, like the stitching around the stars on the border. That's one of the things I really like about your pages Allison, they're just so rich in detail!!
ReplyDeleteThe Crayola Cafe layout is just adorable...love that you colored everything. What a fun layout! Oh and how funny is this...reading your description of coloring the stuff for the page, I thought about how it must've had that "crayon smell", lol! :-)
I love seeing how different your layouts look, all using one sketch! Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThe crayon ideas are amazing!! Love that you make your own embellishments - I need to do that more often.
ReplyDeleteDo you have to do anything special with the crayon pieces, such as a spray?
ReplyDeleteLinda from KS
I really like how you changed the sketch to be a star on the Freedom page.
ReplyDeleteAnd like you, I grew up going to the local dirt track where my Dad raced for many, many years. I love seeing your racing layouts. They always make me smile.
Once again I am thrilled to see the differences you made to one sketch. I am so inspired. And the Crayon ideas are wonderful. Nice touches
ReplyDeleteLove the layout. Can't wait to get my first 3 sketch books.
ReplyDeleteNicole J
Super cute to use crayons and make your own pp!! So creative!
ReplyDeleteGreat layouts! Love the embellishments on the crayola page!!
ReplyDeletelove how you stitched those stars :)
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of using crayons on the page. I have gotten into colored pencils, but I will have to try crayons.
ReplyDeleteI love the crayon-colored stars, and that spaceship is too cute. Good idea to add the stickles.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea to use crayons to embellish your chipboard letters and designs. Who needs paint?
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I love both takes Ali!! Love the stitching around the stars on the first LO and all the stars and on the second I LOVE LOVE LOVE the coloring!! WTGG! FABULOUS work!
ReplyDeleteWow! I LOVE both of these layouts! I'm learning so much from you each day. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWho would have thought to color the chipboard? Not me! Thanks! I love today's layouts!
ReplyDeleteOMGosh! Love this layout! The stickles and the way you did the title "Crayola"---you do the simplest things that always make such a difference!
ReplyDeleteI like the stitching on the blue glitter border! I would never think to put those two styles together, but it's really cute!
ReplyDeletebeautiful! I love all the supporting detail ideas today.
ReplyDeleteThe Crayola lay-out is briliant!
ReplyDeleteAs always, another great sketch. I love seeing how you can use the same sketch in so many different ways!
ReplyDeleteI love two-page sketches, I can't wait to see more!
ReplyDeleteLove it! I'm still just stunned at how you use the same sketch and get such different looks! Awesome...I need to order! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm in LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! I have been in a scrapbook slump for quite awhile, and found your blog through the Two Peas message board. Your sketches are going to be a lifeline! For the first time, I think I can look at a sketch and make sense of it. Having a little trouble with the shopping cart, but I WILL be getting an order in!!
ReplyDeleteAnother great set of layouts. Thanks for doubling up for us this week. You have got me stitching and glittering all my layouts.
ReplyDeleteI love the crayola LO, I have always loved the smell of crayons! I have some photos of my girls coloring and this gives me an idea. Thank you
ReplyDeleteLove the giant star instead of the circle on the first layout. How fun to use crayons and color your papers.
ReplyDeleteLouAnn
You've won me over! I love how easy you make everything look. Sometimes I just sit and stare at all the things I have with no idea how to use them.
ReplyDeleteI love how you added the stitching to the stars in the first layout. The fireworks & stars work perfect for the pictures. Crayola is really cool. I love how you colored things on the page & even your title. So creative! Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteAmy S from Texas
I love, love, love the Crayola layout-so stinking cute!
ReplyDeleteWe don't live too far from KC and are going to have to go check out the Crayola Cafe with our kiddos. Hopefully it's as fun of a place as your layout makes it look!
ReplyDeleteThese will really help me to do the boy layouts. I get in a rut, so am anxious to use these. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteWow! HOw do you come up with all the great ideas? Love the coloring on the "Crayola Cafe" page!
ReplyDeleteYou put WAY MORE effort into your LO's than I do. LOL. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the detail, but I'd be too afraid I'd botch it up at that late stage to do all that stitching. You're a braver soul than me:)
ReplyDeleteWay to ROCK another variation.
I love the idea of using crayons on a page! So cute!
ReplyDeleteI love that star layout. I actually went to my lss to buy that We R line, but was surprised to see how yellowish the "white" areas on the paper were. They don't look at all yellow in your layout. What color cardstock did you use for the background?
ReplyDeleteAhhhh, Crayola Cafe. We just love Crown Center! I think it was brilliant that you colored your own stuff for this layout. It contributes perfectly to the whole theme. My son has gone from zero interest in coloring to practically obsessed with it. I need to get this documented, and now I have the perfect inspiration! The next time you are in KC, you have to try out Kaleidoscope. It is also at Crown Center, and is wonderful. I have such great memories of going there as a child! We love it, too.
Thanks again Ali!
I like how you used the star border in place of a paper strip and then accented with stitches! Very nice. It's also nice to see the one-page layout variations!
ReplyDeleteWow I love what you did on the crayon one I love the stitching and how you used crayons to make your own embelishments - never would have thought of that.
ReplyDeleteI have never done hand stitching on my LOs (used my machine but it is a pain) so thanks to your posts I went out and bought one of those pads to pierce onto so I can start sewing on my pages.
I also love seeing the 1 pages variation even though I don't do many of those.
That glitter border with the stitched stars is just amazing!!
ReplyDeleteI love both layouts...I would have never thought to stitch around the stars!! I'm in a stitching phase right now.
ReplyDeleteThe spaceship on the Crayola page is so cute. I'll have to make sure to take Crayola pictures when we go to KC next month! Thanks for the great ideas!
Had to treat myself after doing housework all morning!! Today's layouts were worth the wait!! Can't wait to see what's in store the rest of the week. Great job Allison!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a really versitile sketch! Really cute layouts!
ReplyDeleteBig fan of the star! Great pages!
ReplyDeleteI got excited when I saw Connie then I saw the K......congrats Connie K.
ReplyDeleteI love the star and how you colored with the crayon on the chipboard.
Love this! I live in KC and Crayola Cafe' is one of my son's favortie places to eat so I have a ton of photos from our visits there. I'll definitely be borrowing your great ideas, Ali. Did you find Fritz's downstairs at Crown Center during your visit? Another great restaurant for the little guys when your in town.
ReplyDeleteLove the "crayon" look of all the accents...perfect for theme!
ReplyDeleteLoving the beauty and versatility of this month's sketch! Really fantastic. Can't wait for volume 6!
ReplyDeleteI love the huge star- great for boy pages and I also liked how you moved the journaling to add an extra picture- it gives it a whole new look. The space ship, stars and home made pattern paper are so fun and cute!!! I love it:-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea using crayons to cover chipboard letters! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteStacie in OK
Love both of the LO's you did for today!
ReplyDeleteLove the huge star!! Love it all!
ReplyDeleteLove the crayola layout, you did a great job on those embellishments! Thanks again!
ReplyDeletelove the variation to a single pager from the double!
ReplyDeleteI did my first layout using one of your sketches on the Fiskateers blog. I didn't get it in in time for the contest, but it made it alot easier after I got over frustration and made it my own instead of Allison's page.
ReplyDeleteLove the new sketch, can't wait for the book.
ReplyDeleteThe crayon patterned paper you made is just perfect for your layout. Thank you for all the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the great ideas!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE< LOVE> LOVE> How you turned the circle into the star. I wish my brain worked more outside the box like yours does. I am writing this down along with other little snippets I am learning along the way so I don't forget. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteLove the star! The star can be used in so many ways, especially with kids sports and academic fairs.
ReplyDeleteI like the crayon idea too. I haven't scrapped our photos from our trip to Kansas City a couple of years ago. I will for sure be putting this one in the file
I love the giant star and star border in the first layout. A great idea with the crayons in the second layout. I love to see how you do the sketch in both one and two page layouts.
ReplyDeleteLove the stitched stars and crayon accents!
ReplyDeleteThe crayola idea is brilliant! Thanks for all the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteLisa
I absolutely love the idea of coloring & creating my own accents...something I've yet to try!
ReplyDeleteWow! These are both great layouts! Love the big star and how you used crayons. Very cool.
ReplyDeletemaybe something to do with the fact that I'm a pre-school teacher, but I love the crayola layout. The colors and great, and I love the crayola title.
ReplyDeleteI have just been introduced to your blog and I love your sketches! But even more, I love the "Variations" that you give
ReplyDeleteLinda, yes I would recommend using an archival spray. Crayons are nontoxic but they aren't acid free. :)
ReplyDeleteJody B, it's so nice to know that another racing fan, or as I call myself, a racetrack brat is reading my blog! :)
Colleen, it is a lot of fun! And they have a huge Crayola store. the boys were in heaven at that place!
Luv2talk, as much stitching as I do I'm pretty sure I could do it in my sleep! lol!
Amy from KC, it is a little yellowish. I used french vanilla which is pretty much the same color as the yellowish, just a little shade of it.
We had wanted to go to Kaleidoscope when we were ther but it was a Sunday and I think they weren't open. I know we'll go back soon though, Drew always talks about how much KC was.
budletsmom, good luck with the hand stitching! I love absolutely love adding it to my pages. There's something about the process of it that relaxes me. :)
Mendy, we were in and out of there so fast that we didn't get a chance to check out much more. I know we'll be going back soon though so I'll definitely have to check it out.
goldyfish, I'll have to go check out your layout! :)
Thank so much everyone for taking the time to leave such nice comments! :)
