Sketch Week, Part 3

Another day of Sketch Week and another day with two layouts to share. :)

This is the sketch, from Sketches for Scrapbooking, Volume 6 (available July 1), that each of my layouts this week are based off of.

Layout #5 - "Freedom"

Supply List - Cardstock: Bazzill; Patterned paper, cardstock stickers, and star glitter border: We R Memory Keepers; Alphabet: My Mind's Eye

• Variation #1 - Who says that circle on the sketch has to be a circle on your layout? To go with the theme of my "Freedom" layout I substituted a large star cut from patterned paper for the big circle on the right page. I used a skinnier version of the same homemade star template I talked about on this post here.

• Variation #2 - On the left side of the page I moved the title more towards the center of the layout. Since I was just using one medium sized star (the one on the left page) having the title over that star would have left a gap. I'm so weird about gaps and holes on my pages! Even if I would have moved the star up to be right underneath the title it would have left a gap above the smaller photo. I could have added some more stars but with the large star on the right page I didn't want to go too overboard. Plus the other two groups of stars followed the same pattern, one medium star, and I wanted to stay with that pattern on the right page. Sometimes I can be so particular about silly things!

• Variation #3 - When I start adding my pictures to the right page I ended up with one more picture that I really wanted to get on the layout. To do this I just cut it to 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" to match the other photos on the right page and then placed it where the journaling would go. This also happened to work perfectly since I didn't have a whole lot of journaling for this page and that picture took care of any holes I might have ended up with.


• Variation #4 - Since the extra picture took the suggested journaling spot I added a few of my journaling strips above the photo and a few below it. I made sure that the top strips ended at the end of a sentence. I didn't want to break up the journaling too much since there was already a picture between the strips.

• Variation #5 - Instead of using a patterned paper strip along the bottom I used a star/circle glitter border.


Because part of the blue glitter border would be going over the large blue star on the right page I added stitching around each star. I was afraid that the blue on blue would have made the glitter border a little hard to see. This way those stars are framed and stand out against the blue patterned paper star.

Left Side of the Sketch

Layout #6 - "Crayola Cafe"

Supply List - Cardstock: Bazzill; Alphabets: Maya Road and Doodlebug; Brads: Doodlebug; Stickles

Just like the right side, the left side of the sketch makes for a great one-page layout.

• Variation #1 - Since this side of the sketch didn't have the journaling I had to find a spot for it. I thought the easiest place was to substitute it for the picture on the bottom. If I wouldn't have had so much journaling I would have kept that picture and then added my journaling to the left of it. Either way works great!

One of the most fun things about this layout was that I made everything, with the exception of the title, brads and some Stickles that I added to accent a few things. Since the layout was about our visit to Crayola Cafe I thought it would be fun to play off the theme and color my own patterned paper and embellishments with crayons. You can see the "patterned paper" and journaling strips in the picture below.


I added green Stickles to the dots on the bottom strip and on the journaling strips I printed my journaling, colored lightly over it, and then cut it into strips.

For the embellishments I cut three different stars and colored them with crayons. The texture of the cardstock really showed through the coloring. I thought the perfect embellishment would be to copy the spaceship in the picture.


I drew the spaceship with a green crayon, added some brads to the center circles, and then added some Stickles to outline it. I also added some yellow swirls coming out of the bottom of the spaceship.

For the title I colored chipboard letters with a red crayon. Talk about a fast way to cover chipboard!



Not your average way to make a scrapbook page but it sure was fun to do something a little different and to really incorporate the theme into every detail on the page.
