Sketch Week, Day 3

Yesterday was download day so if you haven't had a chance yet make sure you go grab the August free sketch at the Scrapbook Generation online store. It's the sketch that I'm using as my starting point for all the layouts this week.

So far there have been a lot of layouts shared for Sketch Week! I love that so many are joining in and sharing layouts on their blogs. Since Sketch Support ended I have really missed seeing what these talented girls create with the sketches and I'm so happy for them to be participating with Sketch Week.

Today you can check out layouts from Lynette Jacobs and Ruth Bonser. Click the links below to visit their blogs and see what they created. I've also added those that posted on Monday and Tuesday too.

"Drew in the Hat"

Supplies - Cardstock: American Crafts; Patterned paper: Echo Park; Stickers and chipboard embellishments: Echo Park; Alphabets: American Crafts; Brads: Doodlebug and We R Memory Keepers; Embroidery floss: DMC

I really changed a lot with this layout to help stretch it across two pages and to accommodate the pictures that I wanted to use. Stretching a sketch to fit a different size layout really isn't as complicated as it can sound. It's just a matter of extending those pieces to fit on two pages. You don't have to have everything perfectly proportioned to the sketch and can just use the measurements suggested as a starting point.

Variation #1 - A big change from the sketch is that I removed the larger background strip. I started off with the intent to keep it on the layout but it was just one of those things that didn't work out. I tend to go minimal with paper and I just struggled with finding the "right" look/pattern/color. (I use the word right lightly when scrapbooking. Obviously there is no "right" in the creative world.)

Variation #2 - I added more smaller strips to my layout. Since I removed the larger background strip I felt like I had more opportunity to add in some extra, smaller pieces.

I took the top background strip and moved it to the top of the large photo mat.

I couldn't put the striped strip over the top of the photo(s) like the sketch suggests so instead I moved it down and changed the size.

Variation #3 - As for the pictures, I had more that I wanted to use which was the reason for stretching the layout over two pages. I used three 4 x 6" photos in place of the one 4 x 4" photo on the sketch. I did only do one photo mat instead of the two on the sketch and stretched it to frame the three photos.

For the two smaller photos I used slightly larger pictures, two 3 x 4" photos.

Variation #4 - I moved the striped strip down but kept the embellishment on it in somewhat the same place. I did move it slightly to the left just so it didn't cover up Drew in the picture.

I also used a larger embellishment than the heart on the sketch. Since I moved it to the side I had more room for a larger star. I accent the circles on the star with brads to give it some texture. I added some banner stickers to that area too.

Variation #5 - I moved the embellishment on the "Polaroid" frame/mat on the sketch down below the two pictures.

Variation #6 - I moved the title. With some of the changes I made like a bigger layout and removing the larger background strip, I left myself with a big open area. I'm not one to shy away from white space but to me it just felt like the appropriate place to put the title. It just felt like it fit there well.

Be sure to check back on Thursday and Friday to see more Sketch Week layouts! And, don't forget about the giveaway! You can find the info for the giveaway in the post from Monday - Sketch Week, Day 1

  1. Wow! Learned so much just reading how you stretched that sketch to a 2-pager. I do some one-pagers but most of the time, I prefer to do two pages. Got my free sketch downloaded and printed already along with some others that I ordered. Thanks so much for the freebie every month. I love them.

I always love the feature where you stretch the one-pagers into a two-page layout as I always seem to have too many pictures for one-page layouts! Thanks Allison!

  10. Love how you extended this sketch into a two-page layout! How did you distress the edges of the smaller "polaroid" pics? I love the look and noticed it on one of you layouts in the store last weekend. It looks like maybe sanded? At any rate, I love the look of it!

  14. This is SO cute!! I love the pictures (especially the use of 4x6 photos which is what I've been doing a lot of lately) and the story that goes with it. I always love your details and the embellishments. I would have never thought of putting brads over polka-dots. I love it!!

I believe that I like the "stretched" two-page layout even better than the original sketch. You always think of awesome ways to embellish your layouts. I wish that I could figure out how that works. Adding brads to the polka dots, for example, is genius. I don't think that I ever would have thought of it. Thanks for sharing.

  20. Thank you everyone! :)

ZoezMom, I sand the edges of the pictures. You can use a nail file or sand paper to do it. I also like using paint to get the same effect. :)
