Sketch Week, Part 3

From mess to trouble and now to monster. I think today's layout is the perfect way to end the Jackson and his toddler behavior layouts.

The sketch, from Sketches for Scrapbooking, Volume 7, that is the starting point for all the layouts this week.

Layout #3 - My Sweet Little Monster

Variation #1 - While going through my pictures I couldn't help but to smile at one particular picture of Jackson. He looked so sweet yet had a little mischievous look in his eyes. I immediately knew that I wanted that picture to stand out and what better way to achieve that than enlarging it.

I could have added the 5 x 7 in place of the 6 x 4 on the left page of the sketch but that would have left me with a smaller space for my title. Most of the time that wouldn't be a problem but with the alphabets I was planning on using and the title idea I had, it just wasn't enough room. I decided to use it in place of the 6 x 4 on the right page of the sketch. It cut my journaling width down but I could make up for that with height if I needed to.

Variation #2 - Creating your layout as a mirror image of the sketch is a great way to change the look and you can achieve a big change without having to change a lot on the layout. My reason for flipping the sketch had to do with the 5 x 7 that I added. Jackson would have been looking off the page if the 5 x 7 had been on the right page. On a photo that stands out that much I try to have them looking towards the middle of the page. When they are looking off the page it can be a little distracting. I don't worry as much about stuff like that on smaller photos.

Variation #3 - Instead of using the two 6 x 3 photo as suggested on the sketch, I used six smaller pictures. This was not only a way to include more pictures on the layout but also to accommodate the 5 x 7.

Variation #4 - On the right side of the page I switched the horizontal 4 x 6 to a vertical 4 x 6. The biggest adjustment I had to make was to the photo above it and that was a minor change. I used a 2 1/2" square photo in place of the 2 1/2 x 4 1/5 photo suggested. I also used a 2 1/2" square photo for the other two on that page.

One of the good things about using a vertical 4 x 6 is that it gave me a larger space for my title. That worked out great for me since I was planning on a longer title.

I used the same corrugated alphabet set as I did on the last two layouts. This time I wanted to add a little color to them. I could have painted them like I did on the last layout but I really just wanted to add a touch of color. To do that I hand stitched an outline around the edges of each letter. Two of the letters had spaces that were a little too small for two lines of stitching for the outline so I just did a single stitched line in the middle.

Variation #5 - A fun idea for adding a different look to strips of paper is to turn them into wavy strips. I used my BoBunny flex ruler to make the wavy strips. I tried to keep them somewhat proportional to the strips on the sketch. If you don't have a flexible ruler you can always cut them free hand or lightly sketch the wavy lines with a pencil.

Variation #6 - I ended up moving one of the embellishments to a completely different area than it is suggested on the sketch. The top embellishment on the left page of the sketch just wasn't working with my pictures. On the sketch it fits nicely in that little corner between a horizontal and vertical photo but since I used three pictures at the same height the embellishment in that area looked a little out of place to me. I ended up moving it to the bottom of the left page.
