SG Publishing Creative Team Call

On Monday we announced the news of Scrapbook Generation's expansion and today it is time for some Scrapbook Generation Publishing news.

We are thrilled to announced our SG Publishing/Allison Davis Creative Team call. On January 1, 2011 we will be launching a new site with all sketches, all the time. You asked for Sketch Month and that is what you are getting.

The new site will feature not just two-page sketches but one-page sketches, card sketches, and something a little different, add-on sketches. I'll share some more details as we get closer to the launch date. To help make this possible, we are looking for a creative team.

The SG Publishing Creative Team duties will be creating a minimum of two projects per month. Sharing your projects from the sketches on your blog or in your online gallery are expected as well, however, a blog and online gallery are not requirements, just a big plus.

Below you will find three sketches (a two-page, a one-page, and a card) that you'll use for your entry.

You can download and print them by clicking here. The two-page sketch is from August Sketch Week and it will be on the bottom of the printable sketches page. The card and the one-page sketch will be at the top of the page.

To enter you'll need to make three layouts, cards, or projects and email them to us at creativeteam@scrapbookgeneration.com. You can make three from the same sketch, or one of each, or two of one and one of another, whatever combination you want.

In your submission entry you'll also need to include:
• your name
• address
• link to blog and online galleries

and answer these two questions.
• Do you mainly make two-page layouts, one-page layouts, cards, etc.?
• Why do you want to be on the SG Publishing Creative Team?

The deadline for submissions is Monday, November 22. We'll send out emails to the selected Creative Team on Monday, November 29. When you send in your submission you will receive a confirmation email within 24 hours.

What we are looking for:
• Scrapbookers and card makers who are comfortable using sketches and have the ability to fit them to their style.
• All styles of scrapbookers and card makers. This includes those that use 8 1/2" x 11", 8" x 8", 6" x 6", etc.
• The ability to take good pictures of the finished product.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. We look forward to seeing your entries.

oh my gosh Allison, I'm jumping up and down right now. Did I read this right SKETCHBOOK MONTH.....
I can't believe it this is soooooo exxxxxxccccciiiiittttiiinnnnggggg!!
What a cool and generous idea for you to include others on this new phase. I'm never going to get off the computer if you keep coming up with all these cool ideas, hahaha

Ok, would love love to help you with this, although kinda nervous. Some questions though are
1. The people you pick will do this every month next year? Or do you change them?

2. I don't have all these neat extras, misting, thread, glitter, etc. is this ok?

3. Is this sketch month going to be right here for free on your blog just like the sketch week is?

Wow I can't believe it, so much fun is going to be happening in your lives right now and the holidays are coming.

By the way can you post a picture of your little men and what they were for Halloween? Thanks

Allison, I just looked back on August sketch and I remember loving this one so much. What a fun one to do. Also had another question...

you said we need the ability to take good pictures of our layouts, could you please give us some pointers? I know my biggest promblem is that there are tons of windows in my home, every room has a few and the sun shining in doesnt' help. I get this shiny white glare on my layouts. So any tips would be nice if you don't mind thanks.

Dawn, to take good pics:

1) Lay your photo down on the floor by a large window. Stand directly over it and take a picture - no flash (or else there will be a glare).

2) Download Picasa (free tool from Google). First, straighten your photo (this will allow you to crop it evenly). Secondly, crop your photo - this gets rids of the background. Lastly, click "I'm feeling lucky", this will brighten up the colours of your page ....

Hope that helps

1. My first thought was for the creative team to have a one year term but since this is all new I'm going to wait and see how things go. Ideally it would be for one year.

2. That is completely okay. We are looking for all styles, from simple to artistic.

3. It will all be free and will be on a new site.

As far as taking good pictures of projects, I always recommend taking them outside. You want to make sure you aren't in direct sunlight because it will cause glares and shadows. I always take mine on my back porch, which is slightly covered. You can take them inside as well. I believe it is north facing windows that are usually the best for natural light photography. You'll always want to avoid using a flash. It not only causes glares but it can alter the colors on the layout. Natural light is the best option for getting true colors. The hardest part, especially with two-page layouts, is getting it centered. If it isn't centered or straight the layout can look lopsided. You can either stand over the layout to take the pictures or use a tripod. I have recently started using a tripod and attaching my layouts to the side of the house with that tacky stuff for posters. Hope that helps! :)

Thanks for the tips Allison. I'm surprised you do this outdoors, how funny if the neighbors see you doing this. I will try your ideas and Jill's to see what works best. This is so amazing and I'm so happy for you. You have come so far in such a short time and you are so young. Can you imagine what you'll be doing when your my age, can't wait to see.

How exciting! I am not confident enough nor do I have the time to invest in a project like this but it is a great opportunity for so many others. Good Luck!

Allison - I hope you will will still be posting layouts because I LOVE your work...also the work of your mom and sister. Does Karin make layouts?

Linda from KS

Allison Davis said...

I will definitely still be posting layouts. Sketch Week will still continue on the new site. Mom and Stacey are both going to be chipping in as well. I wish Karin would too but she doesn't scrapbook as often as we do so I don't know if she'll be up to it. She does wonderful pages too.

Amy from KC said...

Wow! Ok, I have some questions.
- What will happen with your blog here? I love everything that is happening now and am so happy for you, however I also loved the blog before it blew up. (The one where you put up posts about goings on. I still remember your post on Drew in the hospital.) Recently, the blog has offered a lot of new great stuff, but has still had occasional bits of ordinarhy life too. It has been a pretty good blend. Will you still be blogging your life on here?

- For the sketches, can we take a 1 page and expand it into 2 pages, and vice versa?

- How many people will be on the creative team?

I want to participate, but am not sure if I should...I want to be good about sharing my LO's, but get nervous.

Good luck everyone who does go for it!!!

I will still continue to post on my blog. One of the reasons I wanted to add a separate site was that I was missing my old blogging about the boys. I love going back and reading all of those stories and want to get back to doing more of that. There were so many stories that I had completely forgotten about! I'm not sure yet what direction this blog will take but I'm sure it will be a mix of me stuff and scrapbooking.

You can do whatever you want with the sketches. One of the biggest things we'll be looking for is how comfortable people are with changing the sketch to fit their style and what they want to use.

We won't decide on a number until we see how many apply. I was trying to come up with a good number but had a hard time since we don't know what to expect. We could have 5 entries, we could have 100. No matter what number we choose, we will also be picking some guest designers from the entries as well.

You should definitely send an entry! I know it's kind of scary, believe me I've been there. It's so hard when the pages we make are very dear to us and you are asking someone to judge them. But you never know how things will turn out until you take that leap. :)

So glad to hear you will still be doing layouts. I love when you blog about the boys and what's going on in their lives too, it's a perfect mixed.

Good luck to everyone!!

I won't be submitting because honestly, I'm not as talented as some scrappers out there. But I wanted to let you know that I *LOVE* your sketches, especially the two-pagers. Most of the sketches out there are one-page ones and I usually do two-page LOs. So, thank you! And I'm so excited about the new site and all the new goodies to come. Dana

Ooh! I love your sketches too :) I've been a closet follower for a while, but I think I might go ahead and try out :) Thanks for the opportunity!

Allison, I have a question since I'm not really familiar with how you expect your sketches to be used. Do we have to use one or all of these sketches as a guide to our projects or do we need to follow the layout exactly? Im a very free form designer and like to embellish quite a bit. Your feedback is appreciated. I think I'll give this a try...I'm excited about this and appreciate the opportunity to share our designs.

Allison Davis said...

You can definitely use them as a guide. I know I've had some layouts based off sketches that ended up looking nothing like the sketch. I want this new site to prove that everyone can benefit from sketches whether you follow them exactly or just use pieces of it as a guide. I hope to see an email from you with your entry. I can't wait to see what you do! :)

I am thinking of submitting for the CT. I have one question, how far in advance will the designers get the sketches? some people have busier months & some slower... so say they get done with one months submission, will they be able to work on the next months? Just a thought?

Allison Davis said...

The sketches will be emailed on the first of the month for the next month. So January's sketches will be sent on December 1. That way you've got a whole month to work on the projects. I've been on a team before where you had very little time to get the work done. (One time in particular I got an assignment at 5:00 p.m. and had to have it done by 8:00 a.m. the next day!) I don't want anyone to stress or be rushed to get their pages done so I hoping this allows plenty of time to keep that from happening. :)

Precious Memories Scrapbooking & More said...

I have one more question.... can we upload our CT submission to our blog before you reveal the CT desingers? or should we wait until after you pick them?
ps: hope you feel better soon!

Allison Davis said...

You can go ahead and post them anytime you like. :)

I am having a hard time sending my submissions to the creative team email address. Is there a problem with the address? I have sent some to your personal email for the December Guest Designer and it worked fine. Just wondering if there is something special that I should be doing.
