Happy Birthday

Last week we celebrated Mike's 34th birthday with a small little party at home thrown by me and my two little party planning assistants. After dinner we locked Mike in the bedroom and got to work on the party details.

Drew's main job was to make birthday pictures and signs to hang up.

I think he thought it was kind of lame to make his dad the signs and didn't quite understand the sweet touch it would add to the theme of the party. He was confused as to why we were the only ones invited, why we didn't buy a banner and balloons, and why we got daddy stuff for his new office and not a Nintendo DS.

I tried to get Jackson to make some signs too but he was more interested in directing me on what to draw instead of drawing pictures himself. He did, however, jump right into the candle placement task.

Both the boys completely covered the cake with candles. My mistake was that I didn't take the time to explain to them how candles worked. Most of them were inserted wick end down in the cake.

We put on our Spongebob party hats (picked out by Drew) and called the birthday boy out of his room. The boys giggled when their dad put on a Spongebob hat too and eagerly showed him all the things they had made for him.

He admired Drew's signs, opened his presents, and blew out the candles.

When Drew asked his dad, "Did you have a good birthday?" Mike said it was the best birthday he's ever had. To me it was one of the best family moments we've had together. Until recently due to our jobs and conflicting schedules we really haven't had many chances to spend a lot of time together doing things like this. We giggled, gave lots of hugs, and had a blast together. Hearing Mike say that it was his best birthday, well...

that was the icing on the cake.

This is so sweet, love those boys. We are actually taking the year off of inviting the family over on birthdays. I told the kids it will be just us and so far it's been perfect. We can have more one on one with the bday person and just relax and hang out together, no rushing or stressing. Happy belated birthday Mike.

This is the "good stuff". I loved the candles upside down...so cute. Mike is such a good sport to wear the hat. Your photos are great.

The documentation of the "little moments" you do on your blog is priceless, especially years from now. It's so easy to forget the little things, like upside-down candles! Wish I had this available when you and Stacey were little! -- MOM
