One day after school in our backyard Drew said, "Look Mom! I can make letters with my hands!" as he started randomly forming the alphabet. "Wait! That means I can make whole words with my hands!" he said with so much excitement you would have thought it was Christmas "What word should I do? I know! I know!" I watched the cute concentration expressed on his face as he slowly spelled L-O-V-E. He later told me that the word "love" was his favorite and that is why he wanted to spell it. I think it might have had something to do with his crush at school.
What better way to accent those pictures than lots of hearts!
I used two different sizes of heart punches and arranged the hearts in small lines all over the page. I added a hand stitched line down the middle of each line of hearts. The general idea of it came from the February add-on sketch at Sketch Support. In a few random places I also added a small word sticker, one of my favorite go-to embellishments.
I thought Drew did an excellent job spelling the word out with his hands but I wanted there to be no doubt, by looking at the pictures, of what he was spelling. To help enhance each letter shape I added clear acrylic letters on top of his hands.
Clear was perfect because I didn't want the letter to completely cover his hands. I still wanted the clear letter to stand out though so I edged them with white paint. It was just enough to make them stand out without taking away from his crafty hand letters.
I'm thinking this spelling with your hands thing might be a great tool for helping Drew study for his spelling tests at school! Fun and educational!
