1 Sketch, 6 layouts - Part 2

My starting point, the sketch I'm using from Sketches for Scrapbooking, Volume 3.

Layout #2 - "Seeing Santa"

Patterned papers, rubons, punch out die cut - Pink Paislee, jewels - KaiserCraft, alphabets - Heidi Swapp, American Crafts

These pictures of the boys didn't turn out that great quality-wise but I love them! We were expecting Jackson to flip out since he's pretty shy but he surprised us. I didn't care that the picture quality wasn't that great. There was no way I wasn't I going to document this cute moment with Santa!

Variation #1 - I decided to stick with the 4" x 4" photos suggested on the sketch with the exception of one. I decided to add a 4" x 6" photo in place of one of the 4" x 4". I really wanted my favorite photo of the boys with Santa to stand out. Simply keeping it uncropped and larger than the other three photos was an easy way to do that.

Variation #2 - Another thing you can see in the photo above is that I used a circle punch out in place of the accent cardstock tab. It's not the exact size or shape as the tab on the sketch but I don't ever think that's an issue. It's all about getting it in the same general area.

Variation #3 - The journaling block is basically the same as it is on the sketch. Just like the circle, it's not in the exact size as on the sketch. It's also not in the exact same placement as on the sketch. I really didn't want to cover up the bottom of the photo so I moved it so that it overlaps just a small corner on the right. As long as it's in the same general area as it is on the sketch it's going to work. Moving things a few inches here or there shouldn't alter the balance of the layout. The block I used was from a piece of patterned paper that I added journaling strips to.

Variation #4 - I decided to make a Christmas tree to go in place of the tab on the left of the photos. It's quite a bit larger than the tab on the sketch but I really don't worry about the size of the elements. Unless it's a huge difference in size, it's going to work. It's all about the placement and not usually about the size.

How to make the tree:
• First you need a triangle cut from cardstock. To do this I cut a rectangle that measured 4" x 6". At the top (one of the shortest sides) I made a small dot at the center (2"). Then, using a ruler I drew a line from that dot in the center down to the bottom left corner and then one from the center to the bottom right corner. After you have the lines drawn cut along the lines with scissors.

• After you have the triangle cut all you have to do is add strips of patterned paper across it. I start at the bottom and work my way up. Then trim the ends off and ink the edges of the tree.

• I added some finishing touches with a zig zag stitch over the seam of the bottom two strips, blue jewels across the middle, and a rub-on (Noel) on one of the strips.

• The last thing to add is the circle on the top of the tree.

The giveaway is still going on today. Everyone gets a second chance at winning a copy of Sketches for Scrapbooking! (Even those that posted yesterday.) :)

Hi Allison,

Thanks for leaving me the tip, I will try this because I like the look of this layout. The Christmas one is so cute. I love seeing Jackson look right at Santa obviously not scared. The way you left one picture a 4x6 is cool too for a focal picture. Thanks for sharing another great layout.

I looked through my scrapbooks last night and found I used this sketch on a page. :-) However, I hadn't finished embellishing it and journaling it yet. I'm so excited for your great ideas. After I go to a Cricut class at the local srapbook store tonight, I'm going to try to finish my page.

Thanks! This is so inspiring to me! It really helps me think outside my box (or the sketch).

Thank you for doing this series!

I've noticed that you (and your mom) often make Christmas tree shapes out of patterned paper. I love this, because it allows you to choose the size of the tree based upon the exact layout. It also is a handy use of small bits and scraps, which is cost efficient. I have several Christmas payouts with various forms of your trees on them, and I get compliments from other people.

Also, love the use of the 4x6 picture to change things up. Sometimes you just can't crop anything out of a picture.

The 2nd week of the month is rapidly becoming my favorite week!

Another fantastic LO. The paper is great for this christmas page. I received my sketch book yesterday and can't wait to start playing with it. We are snowed in, so I'm thinking tonight is a good night to do just that :) Thanks for being such an inspiration.

I love this new sketch series you're doing...I find scrapping from sketches the easiest to accomplish, and you're ideas have my creative juices flowing! I especially love this seeing non-traditional colors on this Christmas layout. Goes to show you don't need to invest in themed product to make a layout look GREAT!
