Sketch Week, Part 5

I'm always a little sad on the last day of sketch week. This is such an enjoyable process and I can't thank you all enough for the wonderful comments!

The sketch, from Sketches for Scrapbooking, Volume Four, that I have used as my starting point for all seven layouts.

Layout #7 - "Notre Dame"

Supply list - Everything on this layout is Pink Paislee

• Variation #1 - For this layout I used my stretching technique that I talked about last month. Notre Dame has so many amazing details and I wanted to include a lot of smaller pictures of those details. I "stretched" the layout so that I could add those two rows of three 2 x 2 photos. I didn't actually use 4 x 6 photos as the sketch suggested, they have 1/2" trimmed off to make a little room for the two rows of 2 x 2 photos. If I would have kept the 4 x 6 size it would have had the strips on the left and the right running a little too close to the edge of the paper. The biggest problem would have been not having enough room on the right for my journaling.

• Variation #2 - Sometimes it's fun to mix it up and use a patterned paper for the background. I am usually a white or french vanilla cardstock user and mostly because I like for all the elements to stand out. One white and french vanilla the pictures, the papers, the embellishments, the journaling and the title really stand out and grab attention. Plus it makes it so easy when I pick my cardstock color. But there are times that a patterned paper can enhance your pictures. I thought this pattern was so pretty next to the pictures on the layout and really complimented the colors and the overall look of the pictures.

• Variation #3 - Instead of the stars that are suggested on the sketch I used a small grouping of cork circles from Pink Paislee.

I also added rubons around them. In the picture below you can see how I even added a rubon to the folded fabric strip. That is one thing I love about rubons, they will pretty much transfer onto anything. (I even used them on my face for Halloween one year!)

• Variation #4 - I fell in love with these folded fabric strips from Pink Paislee the second I saw them and I was so pleased with how it looked across the bottom on top of the 1 1/2" strip. Adding elements and little details like this is a great way to enhance a sketch and really make it fit your style.

• Variation #5 - Instead of using journaling strips like suggested on the sketch, I used a shaped journaling paper. Because I had stretched the layout and the journaling paper was a larger size than the space I had, I trimmed a little off the left edge and then adhered it so that it was flush with the pictures. That way it kind of looks like the paper still continues under the pictures.

Today is the last day for the giveaway! :)

Also be sure to check back on Monday when I'll post the winner. You'll definitely want to check, I might have a little surprise! :)

You are amazing!! This was such a great surprise for the last day. It is a beautiful layout. I love that you used a pattern background this time, I'm a "whitey" myself but this really fits with your pictures. The yellow really pops on the layout, love the pleated ribbon. My sister just got back from Ireland so I will show her this layout. This was a great way to show off all the details. Great job again!! Thanks so much for visiting and leaving such nice comments. It was a different kind of Easter then most but so mcuh fun all day long.

I love love surprises, can't wait for Monday. Have a great weekend and catch up on your sleep!!

Today's layout is great! I can see using it with all my spring break pictures from Springfield, Branson, St. Louis, Hannibal, Amana, Dubuque, and Field of Dreams.

It was good to stop by the store last week when I was Springfield. I've been able to take a few glimpses of the week while on the road. I can't wait to look at it in more detail when we get back to Minnesota.

I almost wondered if i went to the wrong blog when I saw a patterned paper background! :)

I love the extra 2 x 2 photos, that is a great way to highlight those detail photos. And wow, I cannot believe there are 13 pictures in this layout! I always try to cram in too many larger pictures, so I will be using your stretching technique on this sketch!

OH, I love what you did with this one! Love the added little square pictures. AND I just got some of those Pink Paislee Pleats; good to see them in use!

I absolutely love the colors on this one. Everything goes together amazingly well. I love that stuff from PP & can't wait to get my hands on some of those pleated fabrics. I had no idea that you could put a rub-on on fabric. Thanks so much for that idea! I'm sad this is the last day. I've enjoyed each day getting up & checking the sketches. Thanks!

Do you ever get tired of having me write "breath-taking"!

Amy from KC said...

Well, when you use a patterned paper background, boy do you USE it! That paper and all of the embellishments really capture the feel of Paris, and make me want to go back.(The France Pavilion at Epcot is just not the same.) ;)

Great layout, Ali. I am always sad to be at the end of sketch week, but you have really given a lot of great tips and variety this week. Thank you so much!

On another note, I love the addition of the sketch week column to the right of the blog, with all of the links to the layouts and days. I really like having a little mini sketch to see. It's another great tweak.

Beautiful layout--your examples of how to work with a sketch are just great!! Now I just need to get scrapping myself :)

I really like the techniques that you are teaching us. I feel like I can take the ideas and incorporate it into my own layouts. Usually the classes I take just teach me how to glue everything together to look like the sample. This week has really gotten me thinking. I can't believe there is so much variation to an unassuming black and white sketch.

Love pleated ribbons from PP are to dye for!! Thanks so much for this week. I really enjoy this time every month and I know it takes a lot of work to get it all done, so again, thanks! I do a Month in Review layout every month and all your tips really help me in stretching and making the most out of the sketches.

Wow! What a classy layout! I love that you used a pattern for the background...for a change! Thanks for addressing that question!

Those fabric strips are too cool and I really like the look of the patterned paper for the background with these photos. I usually use cardstock for my bases - not always white, but rarely use PP for a base.

I've loved catching up on your blog today. It was spring break here this week and I was busy enjoying time off with my kids. I have lots of new photos now and have loved the 2-page scrapbook inspiration. Thanks!
