The sketch that I am using for the starting point of all five layouts this week.
This sketch is now available to download and print. To access it you can click on the orange "downloads" button the right side bar of my blog.
Layout #2 - "Sweet Splashin'"
Supply List - Cardstock; Bazzill: Jewels; Prima: Everything else; My Mind's Eye
• Variation #1
With this sketch it is very easy to convert the photos to all 4 x 6. I didn't use all 4 x 6 photos but did exchange the four wallet size photos on the sketch for two 4 x 6 photos. You could also do the same with the three 4 x 4 photos and instead use two 4 x 6 photos. One thing I love though about 4 x 4 cropped photos is that they are so easy to crop from a 4 x 6.
• Variation #2
To make room for a larger embellishment on the bottom left of the page I removed one of the 4 x 6 photos. I love adding larger than normal pieces to my pages and you can easily do this to almost any sketch. It might take a little tweaking here or there but it can be done. As long as the embellishment ends up in the same general area as it is on the sketch it's not going to alter the balance of the layout.
This collection from My Mind's Eye obviously has a boy theme to it but I thought it would also be beautiful to use with water pictures. Especially with all the glitter accented on pieces throughout the collection. You don't have to have the exact theme of patterned paper as the theme of your layout. There was nothing to do with splashing or water with this collection but I added my own handmade accents to help tell the story of the layout and fit my theme.
To make the splashes of water I drew the individual pieces on different patterned papers and cut them out. Now before you say "I can't do that!", trust me, everyone can do this! I struggled with this piece for awhile. None of the pieces I were drawing were coming out with the right curve, look, or shape that I wanted. I was about to give up and use a chipboard piece instead when I got an idea. I gathered a few chipboard and jewel flourishes from my stash and used them for a little help in what direction to go with the splashes. The chipboard and jewel flourishes were quite a bit smaller than what I wanted for the page but I could try to mimic the same curves and shapes as they had. It worked and I was very happy with how it turned out.
• Variation #3
Instead of journaling strips I used a simple journaling block. Journaling strips would have worked fine and there really wasn't any reason not to use them but when I sit down and create the layouts for Sketch Week the journaling area is always one that I try to change with each layout. It is a very simple variation you can use for creating multiple layouts with one sketch.
While we're on the subject of journaling, you might wonder why I have the big splashes on my page when there isn't really a lot of splashing going on in the pictures. Really, aside from the big splash photo on the right page, you might not even notice that Jackson was playing in the water. That is were the journaling came in. This falls into the category of "What story isn't told by the pictures?" I have tons of pictures of him splashing around in the pool but very few great pictures of just him, in the moment, being Jackson. You know, those pictures that you instantly want to frame and hang up where you can see them every single day because it perfectly captures the beauty of the subject. Well, I had him splashing in the pool to thank for the distraction and luck in getting these pictures. The splashing is a somewhat small part to the story but it definitely supports it and I wanted to use it to accent the page in some way.
• Variation #4
I don't think this is really a variation of the sketch but more of a variation of style. Most of the time I use color photos but with this layout I went with black and white instead. I used black and white one, because I thought that black and white would look great with these papers and two, because the colors in the photos weren't my favorite. They background was dark orange and green and just didn't fit with Jackson's expressions. I know that might sound a little weird but I thought Jackson himself had a soft, innocent look in the pictures while the background was too bold and dark. It just seemed right to convert them to black and white to help soften the picture.
Day two means it's your second chance to win one of the three spectacular giveaways from My Mind's Eye and Scrapbook Generation! :)

love the sketch & the new variation...can't wait to plan a new layout with it! :)
This layout is so adorable - I love that you used the papers to create the waves. :-)
I was stuck on what to do at the last stage of a layout yesterday when I didn't have specific cute embellishments to fit the theme when buttons and flowers won't work. Thanks so much for the idea of making my own from the coordinating papers. What an obvious concept, why didn't I think of it. Now I can complete my page.
Thanks so much for doing a variation with the horizontal 4x6 pictures. I never seem to have very many of the vertical pictures and struggle with adapting sketches. Thanks.
This is so sweet! I love the waves you created! I've got lots of water photos to scrap, I might have to use that.
Love the sketch, and love the giveaway!
Breathtaking....I love the photos. Oh yes, the layout. It is wonderful but the photos of baby Jackson are just beautiful. Thanks for showing the larger photos. I do not have many small ones or even ones I can crop down to that size. The papers are so soft and so sweet. It would be great to win any of the papers you have used so far. Thanks MME for the donation.
Linda from KS
LOVE the muted color scheme with the b/w photos. Your waves are just adorable!
I love the sketch and am already excited about using it when I scrap with friends this Saturday. Tuesday's layout is simply stunning.
Glad that you are showing different variations on this sketch. I love that you made your own splashes of water...they look great!
Gorgeous layout and I love the splashes too!
I would have thought neutral embellishments with b/w photos would be boring but it is stunning. I can see why you cherish these photos!
Beautiful layout. I love the splashes you created. Thank you for the download.
Love the black & white photos!
I love this layout!! The photos are awesome in black and white and the colors worked great with each other. JJD
I love how you made it look so different!
Oh My. I love the Black and White photos. So soft and beautiful!
Simply amazing
Love how you made the water splashes yourself! That's a great tip to find a similar curve to copy to make your own embellie and the glitter paper looks awesome. Good move on the black and white photos.
The bath layout is great! Bath pictures are always so much fun. I wish I had more of my kids, but grandkids will have to to. I just absolutely love the Minds Eye collection and sure hope I win one of the packets along with the sketch book.
Thanks for making the sketch easy for us to download. I will add it to my "Allison" folder with some of your other layouts.
Love the splash!
I love the black and white photo's and the journaling block instead of the strips. Great job on the splash!
Great job with the splashes! I love that you hand cut them out of the coordinating papers. I really like the use of black & white photos. I'm also happy to see the horizontal pictures added. I don't take as many vertical as I should.
I love the (lack of) color scheme. We often think that we need brite colors with water pages, You proved that theory wrong. This layout and photos are breathtaking! Beautiful job. Thanks again! Traci
I love the non-traditional colors you used on this layout. It is just beautiful!
The difference between this layout and yesterday's is amazing with it being the same sketch. I LOVE the b&w photos and the way they really showcase Jackson in this LO.
I love your splashes!! I appreciate the encouragement that we can make embellishments too :)
200 comments yesterday! Wow! That's great!
This paper worked so well with your pictures. Definitely paper I am going to want to get. Another gorgeous layout.
I just love this layout. I definitely think that changing your photos to black and white was the key. I hope to use this sketch in the near future.
Awesome-just awesome! Love the idea to use this line with water photos. I would never have thought of that!
Going to do swimming pics of my daughter...totally stealing this!
I loved the variation and th idea of making your own embellishment.
Sandy from Missouri
I just love how the "muted" colors allow your pictures to stand out so much. The My Minds Eye is lovely.
I just love this layout... everything works so well together!! The colors, the layout... everything!!!
I an reaaly enjoying all of the different variations of this sketch. I can see it used in so many different ways for some great pages! thanks for sharing it!
I love that your sketches are so easily adaptable to photos that don't require cropping. That makes the process go that much quicker.
Today's sketch is beautiful. By the way do you print out your photos at home- if so what printer do you use?
I am in the market for a new one and your photos are great.
I have never used black and white photos. I should try this!
Another great sketch layout for us.
I like how you used black and white photo's with the muted colour paper and what a great idea you shared for making waves. Would love to know what printing program you use for your photo's to get different sizes.
This Lo is gorgeous! Love the glitter here and there, so pretty!!
Great photos and layout. Love the muted colors.
Kathy R
Awesome, love the bw photos & the muted colors of your papers. Jackson is a doll!!! Great lo!
Very interesting how you substituted the 4 x 6 pics for the wallets and it worked great! I liked how you used the crystals. It's probably hard to do with boy pages.
I love how you used black and white pictures, and how you used 4x6 photos instead of wallet ones.
Thanks for the inspiration !!!
Karina
I loooooove this!!!! So adorable...
- April W
Love this variation and your explanations! The black and white photos are perfect with the paper!
I love the colors with the black and white photos. I tend to put b&w on bright color paper to make it stand out but what you did is beautiful!!
You sketch saved my day. Had 10 pictures to put on a double-pager. The pics were not the best, and I was so uninspired by them. but they told a story that needed telling. I pulled them out, remembered that I had your new sketch, got busy and wound up with a LO that I totally love. Thanks!!
This layout is beautiful. The color scheme is calm and subtle and lets the pictures of your little boy be the star of the show. I just love how creatively your mind works. You have an awesome way of capturing perfection in you layouts. It just makes me want to go get scrapbooking right now!
Jackson looks so grown up! What a cutie, and I love the LO!
Beautiful layout! I love how awesome the photos look against the neutral papers. And it looks so much different than yesterday's layout...great variation on this sketch!
I love the contrast between YESTERDAY"S BOLD RED pics and today's muted B&W. A good reminder that simple variations can really change up our LO's.
LOVE IT!
Love the tip on using flourishes to help create the splashes. That was the very first thing I was drawn to on this layout and I said to myself "no way could I do that". Now, I think I can.
You have such great ideas!!
I like everything about this one. The b&w photos, the colors, and the "water"...too cute!
I really love how you will go outside the box to make elements for your pages. I also love how you try to incorporate different types of elements to make it pop. Great LO
I loooove those splashes you made!
I love this layout! I really like how the rhinestone swirls are layered with the paper!! Great!
What a beautiful layout! I love the big "splash" and the black and white photos are gorgeous! I should try that too, thanks!
Another great layout. I love the look using black and white pictures and never think to do this. Hoping to get a chance to play with this sketch soon.

The new variation of the sketch is adorable.

The colors are great!
The b&w photo choice is great!
The splash is great!
The whole thing is just GREAT! ;)
Can't wait for tomorrows!
Thank you for the download and the variations! I even noted them on my print out so I will have it to reference back to! I am a mom of 7 boys so life is busy. Scrap time is limited as you can imagine, and I am just so thrilled to have found your blog. It has renewed my creativity and even the way I scrap. I used to struggle to find a layout to go with my pics but now I make my layouts, then find the perfect pics to go with them! What a sense of FREEDOM!! It's a wonderful thing!!! THANK YOU!!!!
great idea with the water splashes!! i am going to have to use that!
I adore this layout! The splashes are so cool!
I love this layout of Jackson that you made Allison! :).. He's so adorable! :).. I also love the papers that your using as well! My Mind's Eye is one of my favorite paper lines! :)..
Ashley L.
Another great layout and more inspiring variations. Thanks!
Love how the layout incorporates so many pictures! Fantastic! Love the colors and the pictures are adorable!
I love love this layout. Jackson is so much bigger and his cheeks aren't so chubby anymore. He is so stinkin cute. Thank you for giving us the idea of just using photos that you love even if they don't go with the theme of the layout. I agree 100% on these photos, I love his expressions and that they are b/w photos really adds to it. So cool making your own splashes. I can't believe all the comments from yesterday you are ROCKIN IT GIRL!!! So far it's a tie for my favorite they are both such adorable boys you have. Can't wait for tomorrow!!
LOVE the splashes! Thanks for another chance to win!
Love the MME paper and how you used them in this layout. Like the tip of printing photos in b/w especially if the pix is not that great. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for being able to print the sketch.
I stood in the store and stared at this paper for quite a while trying to think of a group of photos I could use it with. I ended up not buying any. I will be buying some next trip.
I am so going to take your sketch class. With just these to sketches you have given me tons of ideas.
I love the soft color palette of this one!
Super cute splashes!! What a great idea!! Love the subtle colors of this LO!!
I love the layout that you did and how you used mostly all 4x6 photos and the big splash accent that you made. Thank you for the sketch! :)
One of my favorite things about sketch week is seeing your hand made embellishments. I love your creativity!
I love the 4x6 and 4x4 variation. As soon as I saw today's layout I thought of 5 or 6 sets of pics that I have that would work for this. I need to be braver and try to make my own embellishments. I still think about that Crayola Cafe LO where you made everything...even the paper.
I love the black and white pics of Jackson. He is getting to be so big Ali, and looking like such a boy now. They stay babies for such a short time, don't they?
I've been meaning to ask about the names and source of the fonts that you use on your blog. (The ones in "Sketch Week" and "August" on the sidebar.) I think that they would be great additions to my font collection. I just got a wide format printer, and am ready to take it for a spin! :)
Wow, love the b/w photos and color scheme in this layout. Not sure if I could do the wave pattern, I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for giving all the details in the variations.
I like the variations! Especially the color palette with the black and white photos:)
Megan S
This paper is perfect for this layout! Love all your handmade embellies! The waves are just too cute as is your little boy! The B&W pictures make it pop!
Love the black and whites on the soft colors of the paper. I have tons of pool pictures I will definately try them in b/w.
love the black and white, and the waves are my favorite! I need to try more creative accents like that on my pages!
Jackson is adorable!! Your waves turned out perfectly. I was wondering if you drew them or if they were diecuts. Great job!!
CarissaH
What a fabulous layout! I can really see myself using this sketch a lot, with its use of 4x6 photos. Thanks for the inspiration...
Great Variation! I really like how you swapped the two wallet sized photos for a 4x6. And how you used a journaling block instead of the strips. Can't wait to see tomorrow's variation.
Just gorgeous! Love the muted color scheme with the b/w photos. (I want to decorate a bedroom with those colors - so soothing!) And those photos are to die for. What a cutie!
My favorite variation is the photo sizes. I tend to get in pretty close when taking pics so I have a hard time cropping down to really small sizes.
Fabulous layout Allison !!! I love your spin on this sketch, I have such a hard time with this, I always feel I have to follow the sketch to a tee or it will look unbalanced??? Thanks for all your great inspiration!
Another great layout. Love the wave title on the left side of the page.
Absolutely love the water splashes you made. I am going to try this myself. I hope I can be successful! Great page.
LOVE this layout! I can see why it's your favorite. Just gorgeous.
oh my...this is adorable!!
What a cutie !!! I love the way the paper compliments the images without overpowering them. Another job well done !!!!!
The layout, as usual, I love. But my comment is about how much Jackson looks like Drew in a couple of those pictures! It's freaking their Aunt Stacey out just a little!
Love how you adapted this to 4x6 photos! This is definitely my most common scrapped photo size. Thanks for sharing this easy adaptation!
I absolutely love this layout!!! These pattern papers on now on my wish list! I often use bright vibrant fun colors like you do in a lot of the layouts you share, but the soft colors and tones in you used here just set such a wonderful mood. The black and white photos work in a way that regular color photos could not and it gives the layout a deeper/more meaningful feeling. I will definitely need to challenge myself try this myself and add it to my inspiration and technique binders...
Thanks so much~Beatrice
Love the waves on this layout! Really cool!
Love the sketch and variation ideas. I also adore the MME papers!
Another wonderful layout. You always come up with beautiful accents that add the perfect touch.
Beautiful, love the black and white photos. Are giveaways #1 and #2 the same? Love all the mme.
Great inspiration for using glitter on boy pages. Great sketch!!
I LOVE this layout. The photos are amazing, and the water splash detail is fantastic. Really gorgeous!
Love this layout and the fact that you used black and white photos.
Another awesome lo!
Love the black and white photos. I have already printed this sketch off and am excited to use it.
Tracy C.
My nephew just had his 2nd birthday at the pool on thursday and this idea would be perfect for that! Way to show the waves. I have had a couple of layouts that could have used somthing like this! Great Idea!!!!!
Love the colours and papers you used on this layout.
Great idea with the flourish splashes, gotta remember that one!
I've been struggling to finish a layout that I want to put some swirls on, but I haven't found anything that fits the picture in my mind. Maybe I will follow your lead and create my own. Thank you!
I love the waves! So are so cool!
The waves totally make the layout! You are so super talented Ali!
Beautiful layout, love all the soft colors.
Hi Ali! You do such an awesome job balancing your photos in your sketches...I think that's what's so appealing to my eye. You mentioned converting your color pictures to B&W. Could you share how you do this?
Thanks for sharing!
I love the splashing accents and wonderful pictures! Great job once again!
The hue and tones of the paper provide a wonderful backdrop to allow the pictures to "pop" visually. The sketch variation using essentially 4x6 pics illustrates another time saver to scraplift!!
Another great example! I love how you removed one of the pictures and created a larger embellishment. And the black and white photos work great with that paper - I need to try more of that myself. thanks again!
Those waves are incredible - I think I'll try that on a summer LO! Thanks for sketch week because it's my fave :D
Love today's variation! I seem to like to focus in on things when I take pictures. The 4x4 and 4x6 photos make life so much easier when trying to figure out a sketch.
In addition, I've never done a layout with black and white photos. That is something to think about as I'm going outsie the box even more.
Stunning layout, love the wave embellishment! Thanks too for the downloadable sketches, will be adding them to my collection! Love your blog...
Amazing how you can make it look totally different.
I am always so inspired by you Ali! Your sketches are so versatile -- I love making them my own!
Love the wave embellishment. Fabulous layout.
I am so happy to see a sketch with room for so many photos. I tend to take a lot more pictures than I can fit on a layout, so I can see myself getting a lot of use out of this sketch.
P.S. Thanks for the tip on how to create the "Splashes". It can be hard to find chipboard to do the job.
Love the variation on this one. That splash wave is magnificient, love it!!
What a beautiful layout! Great choice in using black & white photos, it goes so beautifully with this line of papers, where a typical kiddie pool picture wouldn't. I really LOVE being able to print out the sketch...thanks!
Precious pictures, love the subdued color palette. Reminds me to use B & W when the background is too busy or the colors don't work.
I love this sketch! Can't wait to use it! Your layout is amazing. I love the look the black & white pictures give it.
Stacie in OK

Your kids are so photogenic!! Love how you were able to work some bling into a boy page!!
All I can say is WOW! Just love your stuff. I'm gonna get my hands on your sketch books ... when my local scrapbook store restocks. In less than a week they totally sold out. I love the variations ... same layout, so different and both just beautiful. WOW!
Jackson is so cute! Sometimes he looks just like Drew.
Love the layout!
You're right-- these papers look very nice with your water pictures! Good idea with the gem flourishes for a guide on designing curves!!
Love the layout! May have to print up some black and whites. Classic.
Love the use of the black and white pictures. Nice tip about making the splashes.

Oh my gosh I received my order today and am loving the sketch books I got. I hope to have them all one day.
Those "splashes" are to die for on this page. I love the aqua colors of this line and the black and white photos with it.
Wow! This is one of my most fave layouts!!!!
Wow, now that is some awesome paper and with those black and white photos it really is great. Love that little shimmer ans shine.
Love the muted colors of this layout! Gorgeous!!!
I love the way you used the black and white photos instead of color. I wouldn't have thought to do that! I don't use black and white enough, I guess.
I also love the "waves".
o! :)
Yvonne, you definitely should. It is some of the most beautiful paper I've seen.
Valerie, I hope you do! I really think it's going to be a fun class and I know it's got loads of information for using sketches!
Amy from KC, the Sketch Week font is call Postmaster and the August font is called Professor. They came from a font cd my mom gave me a while back from Autumn Leaves. Have fun with your new printer. I love mine!
Bonnie, I think the biggest thing to remember is that as long as you are placing things in the same general areas as on the sketch, it should always be balanced. :)
Shari, I'm so glad you asked that! They aren't and I hadn't even noticed that I had accidently posted one of the pictures twice until you asked. It's fixed now so you can see the other giveaway. :)
LeAnne, my photos automatically upload to a program called iPhoto it's got a really easy convert to b&w option. Sometimes I use Photoshop if I have more things I need to edit that just switching it to b&w. You should be able to do it in any photo editing program and on photo hosting sites. :)
Paper Doll, that seems to be happening at a lot of stores that are carrying our books. We were hoping they would sell great but had no idea they would go that fast! :)
Thank you everyone for the compliments for the page and my cutie Jackson
Beautiful layout!! I really wish I had this creativity.
~Wendy
P.S. Your little boy is very cute!

What a great variation. AND oh my, look at the cutie! Love his cheeks!
LOVE this page!!! The photos are stunning and I don't think they all *need* to have him splashing to get the point across! Love it!!
Pick me! Pick me! ;)
The b/w photos really give this layout a sophisticated feel!
Love the mellow colors...what a cutie he is!
Thank you for showing us another variation on an already awesome sketch! I like that I could adapt this one with my horizontal photos. I always forget to take a variety of horizontal and vertical and thus it's hard to find layouts that use more horizontal!
This page is BEAUTIFUL!! Love the waves, and that beautiful boy!
Setting aside my Sunday during this upcoming weekend to try my hand at your layout!
Love what you do with these sketchs...AWESOME.
Lori H.
