The sketch, from Sketches for Scrapbooking, Volume One, and the starting point for each of my layouts this week.
Layout #5 - "Cookies for Santa"
Supply list - Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper; Patterned paper: Crate Paper; Alphabets: American Crafts (cookies), Making Memories (for), and I'm not sure what the Santa is because I bought it so long ago; Chipboard flourishes: Bo Bunny; jewels: KaiserCraft; Stickers (flour and rolling pin): Jolee's• Variation #1 - I mixed things up with the photos this time by adding another column of four 2 1/2" square photos and by substituting two 3 1/2" x 6" photos for the suggested 5" x 7" on the sketch. This is another great option for using a couple of 4" x 6" photos. All I did was cut 1/2" off each one to end up with the same 7" height.
• Variation #2 - Because I added another column on the right page and the photos on the left page had more length I used a technique I call "extending" the sketch. On yesterday's layout I used "stretching" and while this is similar and kind of sounds the same it's still very different. Stretching is pulling the overall design to fit the extra pieces you've added. Extending is adding more of the same design. To explain in a little more detail (and I'm trying not to seriously confuse you all!), since I added more photos I added one more 3" x 7" strip of patterned paper on each page for a total of six strips. The photos would have covered up enough of the original four 3" x 7" strips that it was almost pointless to have them there. Sure I could have used the stretching technique and add wider strips but the whole point of sketches week is to show you several different ways to use a sketch over and over.
• Variation #3 - I ended up going back to using a flourish as suggested on the sketch and added a few extra embellishments on top of it.
I decided to take out the three circles below it and repeated two more flourishes in place of the other two sets of circles on the right page.
• Variation #4 - I decided to leave out the stitching on the striped strip. I just wanted to show that the strip works great on it's own without the stitching.
• Variation #5 - I used a journaling block instead of strips. Cutting out journaling strips can kind of be a pain and take a little more time than just adding a simple block. It's also a great way to change the look of the layout too.

Christmas layouts are my favorite. No matter how you interpret this sketch it's awesome.

This is a great layout too. I just did a layout yesterday about my kids making their cookies. I love all the little photos you added to this one. The paper and colors are great, it's not to christmasy. Thanks for a fun week of inspiration again. I also appreciate that you take the time to answer our questions and respond to our comments even though you are busy. I also want to know where you get your pictures done at? Do you always order wallets and variety sizes? Have a great weekend.
I like how you changed the sketch to use 2 rows of little photos. I love the detail shots too. I have really enjoyed this sketch this week. It's been a great little scrapbooking tutorial.

I loved all 5 of layouts- they are all fun and pop:-) I really like how you extended the sketch on this one- what a great way to vary the design. I am going to make a list of all your variation techniques and keep them with my sketch books ( I just got 3-5- love them)- to help inspire me to use the sketches again and again!
Wow, I have really enjoyed seeing the layouts this week! You managed to take one sketch and do so many different things with it! On this layout, I loved the patterned paper choices and the way the flourish visually extends across the entire layout. Love it!
I'm always a little sad at the end of the sketch week too! I really enjoy watching you spin, twist and alter up the sketches! TFS!
Another great week of layouts. I really like this one because of all the little pictures on the side. I have alot of baking with grandma pictures, so I might just have to copy this layout. thanks for sharing your wonderful layouts with all of us.
Thank you for all the scrap lessons this week! I love the variations you've created with one sketch. I have always loved using sketches but now I realize the options are endless when I interpret them!!!

Another great week of ideas. I am hoping this is my lucky week since my birthday was on Monday. I have used all the sketches in Book 5 and would love to get another one. Already looking forward to April.

I looked at those flourishes at my local scrapbook store yesterday, set them down because I didn't know how I would use them, but I really like how they look on your finished page! I will be going back to grab them!
I love how you got more photos on this layout. Going scrapbooking tonight and must remember that I can stretch things, use a journaling block, or extend the sketch.
Can't wait to get book 5 when we come to Springfield in April for Spring Break! Hope it's warmer there than it is in Minnesota!
Oh, day 5 of sketch week is always so bittersweet. I always have so many new ideas, but am also sad that it is over for the month. You know, May is National Scrapbooking Month... doesn't "sketch month" have a nice ring to it? ;)
Thank you for this week. I am so inspired by your ideas and teaching! It is really special that you take the time to not only put up a sketch and layout, but give us design tips and rationale, too. It's like a monthly class. You even provide positive reinforcement. I am just so grateful.

Your layouts were so awesome this week. My favorite was "Puzzle Pro". I would love to know how long it took to make that layouts. It is amazing. Can't wait until next months sketch week.
Dawn, I most often use Walmart.com and then pick them up an hour later. I usually get 4 x 6 prints and then a few wallet size prints. If I'm using a sketch, which I seem to be doing more often these days, I order my prints depending on what photo sizes are on the sketch. :)
